10 Healthy Habits for Glowing Skin

It’s definitely possible. A big part of getting that glowing skin you want has a lot to do with the daily habits you make along the way.

Achieving the clear, healthy, radiant skin you want isn’t one-size-fits-all. But adding some of these daily habits may improve the health and glowing appearance of your skin.

Wash Your Face Twice a Day

habits for glowing skin 1
One of the best daily habits for glowing skin is to wash your twice a day.

One of the best things you can do for your skin is to wash it.  You might be thinking: obviously. But hear me out.  Far too many people look past the importance of not only washing their face but washing it properly.

Ask me how I know.  *cringe*  Honestly, it’s because I used to be one of those people.  Sure, I washed my face once a day (um, usually).

But I definitely also went to bed with my makeup on.  More than once. Okay, way more than once.

Then I realized that going to bed without washing my face wasn’t only about the grossness of leaving my makeup on.  It was also about resting my face on the pillow with the yuck of the day still on my face.

And by yuck, I mean makeup, sweat, dirt and grime, bacteria, viruses, oil, dead skin cells, pollution, and so on. So gross.

It’s generally a good idea to cleanse your face twice a day. There are many benefits of washing your face beyond removing all that yuck of the day in the evening.

Washing in the morning removes oil and any products you used the night before.

Another advantage is that cleansing your face keeps your skin hydrated and helps with pore size. One more benefit is that your skin products can absorb into your skin properly.

This enables them to work to their potential. Bonus: money-saver!

Choose the Right Cleanser

You also need to choose the right cleanser and skincare line for your skin.  You should choose yours based on 2 main factors:  your skin type and your skin concerns.

Your skin type refers to whether your skin is oily, dry, combination, or normal.

If you have oily skin choose one that will help mattify, clear up breakouts, and prevent blemishes.  Whereas if you have dry skin you’ll choose one that maintains proper moisture levels.  This will help keep your skin hydrated.

As mentioned, you’ll also want to consider your skin concerns when choosing a cleanser.  Some common skin concerns include loss of firmness, enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, fine lines and wrinkles, acne, and dull skin.

If your concern is maturing skin choose a product that can help reverse the signs of aging.  My primary concern is fine lines and wrinkles, and I love this skincare line.  My skin has never looked better!

Always, always, always be sure you choose a line that only contains safe ingredients. Ingredients that are good for your skin AND your health. I can help with that, too!

Have Different Morning and Nighttime Routines

Besides washing your face twice a day, you should adjust your routines depending on the time of day. Your skincare routine shouldn’t be identical in the morning and at night.

Rise and Shine

In the morning, it’s all about cleansing and preparing your skin for your products.  A clean face allows everything to work better.

Your toner or essence, moisturizer, and sunscreen can absorb well.  And because of that, your makeup will also set better.

Ready for Bed

Nighttime is the time to prepare your skin for the rejuvenation that happens while you sleep.  Generally, you’ll use a heavier moisturizer at night.

Nighttime is the perfect time to add in my favorite overnight resurfacing peel.  This is the easiest resurfacing peel ever.

Simply apply it to your clean face, put your moisturizer over it, and go to sleep!  That’s it!  It will gently exfoliate your skin while you sleep.

Despite the name, you don’t peel anything off. Just wash your face in the morning.  And enjoy your smooth, glowing skin!

This might be one of the easiest habits for glowing skin–with the added bonus of self-care. Win-Win!

Be Mindful of the Seasons

It’s a good idea to further adjust your skincare routine based on the season you are in. As the weather and climate change, so do the needs of your skin.

In the fall and winter, pay attention to whether your skin is getting dried out.  This happens due to cold outdoor temperatures and drier indoor air.

So using more moisturizer, or a heavier one might be a better choice in the fall and winter. Also, if you wear makeup, you may prefer a foundation with a little more coverage.

In the spring and summer months, you’ll be caring for your skin based on hot weather and humidity. This is when a lighter moisturizer may work better.

Switching to a lightweight, tinted moisturizer in the spring and summer may be a good option. You may also need to reapply your sunscreen on your face and body more often in warmer weather.

Get Your Vitamins and Nutrients

This All Bright C Serum is one of my favorite “easy button” daily habits for glowing skin.

Eating a healthy diet is very important for glowing skin. Your gut can affect so many things, including how you look and feel. Whenever possible, incorporate the colors of the rainbow into your diet.

And don’t forget that your skin needs those added vitamins too! The All Bright C Serum is my favorite way to add vitamin C topically to my skin.

This product is an easy way to brighten my skin and give me a natural glow. This is a great daily habit to add to your daily routine for glowing skin!

Reduce Your Stress Levels

habits for glowing skin reduce stress
Reducing stress is a key habit for improving your skin’s appearance.

We all know that emotional stress can be disastrous for our mental and physical health.  But did you know that your skin will sometimes show signs of stress even before the rest of your body?

Stress impacts the body and skin a lot more than many people think. Not sure where the rosacea flare-up is from? Do you keep getting breakouts that seem like they have no real cause? These might be from stress.

One of the benefits of gratitude is a reduction in stress.  So it’s a great idea to learn how to start a gratitude practice as a way to reduce your stress.

Improve Your Sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep is one of the important daily habits for glowing skin.

I’m sure you’ve noticed that a night of poor sleep can give you dark, puffy circles under your eyes.  The dreaded under-eye bags, am I right?

But, did you know that sleep deprivation can also lead to fine lines and wrinkles?  And droopier-looking skin around the corners of the mouth?

Crazy, but true.  You can check out this study by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine to learn more.

The reason behind this has to do with cortisol and collagen.  Cortisol is a stress hormone.  Collagen is the protein that keeps your skin smooth and elastic.

When you don’t get enough sleep, your body releases more cortisol.  When you have excess amounts of cortisol in your blood, it can break down the collagen in your skin.

So a chronic lack of sleep can lead to poor skin elasticity.  Definitely not what we want if we’d like to age gracefully.

One more reason to learn how to start a gratitude practice– improved sleep is a benefit of gratitude

Hydrate From the Inside Out

habits for glowing skin water
Hydrating with plenty of water will help you achieve glowing skin.

Dehydrated skin tends to be dry, tight, and/or flaky.  Your skin needs sufficient water and moisture, but not just on the outside.

You need to provide your body with plenty of water to stay hydrated. The more water you drink, the better your skin will start to look.

If your skin doesn’t look as tight and vibrant as it used to, it might need a little extra hydration.  And if you have pimples or blemishes, hydrating may help.

A good rule of thumb is to aim to drink about half your weight in ounces each day.

As an example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you would aim to drink 75 ounces of water a day.

Use Sun Protection

One thing many experts agree upon is that you should be sure to apply sunscreen every day.  Even on cloudy days.  Wondering why that is?

Per the Skin Cancer Foundation, “Even when it’s cloudy, up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV radiation reaches the earth. Going unprotected on an overcast day can lead to skin damage.”

You may have heard that sunscreen protects against skin cancer and sunburn.

But did you know studies indicate that daily sunscreen use also helps reduce signs of skin aging?  Now that’s some good news!

Apply Skincare Products in the Proper Order

Just as you would layer your makeup in a certain way, you also want to layer your skincare products properly.

In general, you should apply your products from lightest to heaviest.

  1. Cleanse your face to remove grime, makeup, and other impurities.
  2. Prep your skin for treatment by using a toner or essence. These products prepare your skin for maximum absorption of products.
  3. Treat your skin. This is when you will target specific skin concerns, such as fine lines, with a serum.
  4. Protect your skin by moisturizing. This helps to keep your skin hydrated. It also strengthens your skin’s barrier and locks in the amazing products you used in the above steps!

It’s also important to note that you should put your sunscreen on top of your moisturizer.  You can then apply your makeup if you choose to do so.
