Top Retinol Alternatives for Sensitive Skin: Bakuchiol, Clean Serums & More

Last Updated: October 14, 2025

Let me guess—you’ve heard that if you’re serious about aging well, you have to use retinol.

I used to believe that too.

But once I started learning about what was actually in my products, and how some of those ingredients could do more harm than good—I changed course. And I’m so glad I did.

That’s when I discovered effective alternatives to retinol, like bakuchiol, that deliver anti-aging results without the risks.

In this post, I want to share:

  • Why I no longer use retinol in my skincare routine
  • What I use as my go-to bakuchiol retinol alternative (and why it works)
  • How these clean alternatives can actually strengthen your skin over time

Let’s break it down.

Why I Ditched Retinol (And Don’t Regret It)

Retinol has been marketed as the gold standard anti-aging ingredient for years. It’s in everything from drugstore serums to luxury night creams.

But here’s what I learned: retinol can cause sensitivity, peeling, and redness. It can make your skin more vulnerable to sun damage.

And for some people, it actually compromises the skin barrier over time—the very thing that protects your skin from moisture loss and environmental stressors.

When your barrier gets damaged, you’re left dealing with inflammation, redness, breakouts, and dryness. Not exactly the glowy, youthful skin we’re going for.

Even more concerning? According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), retinol and its derivatives (like retinyl palmitate) score as high as 9 out of 10 on the toxicity scale.

Data from an FDA study indicate that retinoid ingredients may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions on sun-exposed skin.

It’s no wonder retinol is on the Never List—a list of over 2,800 harmful or questionable ingredients that will never be used in Counter products. That’s the kind of transparency and safety standard I was looking for.

When I learned all of this, I had to rethink everything I assumed about retinol.

Safer Retinol Alternatives That Actually Work

If you’re trying to avoid retinol, here’s the good news: there are safer alternatives that deliver real results.

Some are plant-based. Some are peptide-powered. Many offer similar benefits to retinol—smoother skin, improved firmness, fewer fine lines—without the irritation or long-term concerns.

You’ve probably heard of a few popular retinol alternatives like rosehip seed oil (which contains natural vitamin A), AHAs like glycolic or lactic acid (which exfoliate and boost cell turnover), or vitamin C (a brightening antioxidant).

All of those can work. But when I was researching natural retinol alternatives, I wanted something that checked a few specific boxes:

  • Clinically studied and effective
  • Gentle enough for daily use
  • Supports my skin barrier instead of breaking it down
  • Safe for long-term use (and ideally EWG VERIFIED)

That’s when I found the ingredients in Counter’s Countertime line. And they’ve been a game-changer.

The Retinol Alternatives I Actually Use

Here’s what I landed on—and why each ingredient matters for mature skin.

Skincare flat lay on a marble surface with two frosted dropper bottles, an open jar of cream, a pink jade roller, and eucalyptus leaves, conveying a serene, wellness mood.

Bakuchiol

Bakuchiol is one of the most well-researched natural retinol alternatives out there. It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, improve elasticity, and even out skin tone—without irritation or sun sensitivity.

Bakuchiol works by supporting your skin’s natural collagen production, similar to retinol, but in a much gentler way. It doesn’t cause peeling or make you red and flaky for weeks while your skin “adjusts.”

It’s a star ingredient in Countertime’s Retinatural Complex, and it’s in every single product in the line. If you’re looking for a bakuchiol product that really works, this is my top recommendation.

Sea Fennel

Sea fennel is a coastal plant known for its ability to visibly firm skin and smooth fine lines. It’s one of the three retinol alternatives featured in the Countertime Retinatural+ Advanced Super Serum—and it’s clinically studied for its anti-aging benefits.

What I love about sea fennel is that it works to enhance skin elasticity without any of the drama that comes with traditional retinol.

Peptides

Peptides are short-chain amino acids that help your skin build collagen and elastin—two key players in firmness and bounce.

The Countertime line uses both tetrapeptides (in the PM cream) and peptide-rich cranberry extract (in the serum) to support skin structure and smooth the appearance of wrinkles. They’re gentle, effective, and a favorite in clean aging-well routines.

Swiss Alpine Rose

This antioxidant-rich botanical is part of the Retinatural Complex and helps your skin resist environmental stress. It’s packed with compounds that protect against oxidative damage—which is a big contributor to visible aging.

Swiss Alpine rose also helps soothe skin, making it a perfect partner for bakuchiol.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Niacinamide is a multitasker. It brightens, hydrates, supports the skin barrier, and helps even out skin tone. It’s also an antioxidant, which means it helps defend your skin from daily environmental stressors.

In the Countertime serum, niacinamide works alongside the other retinol alternatives to give your skin a radiant, healthy glow.

The bottom line? You can get visible results—without retinol. These ingredients support your skin’s natural function, rather than stressing it out.

What I Use: The Countertime Collection

Five maroon skincare bottles and jars with white "Counter" branding are arranged on a reflective surface. The mood is elegant and modern. Website: shewelcomeswellness.com.

I use the Countertime Collection, which is formulated with Retinatural Complex—a plant-derived blend of bakuchiol and Swiss Alpine rose that delivers results similar to retinol, but without the harsh side effects. You can read my full review in this post.

And here’s what really matters to me: it actually supports your skin barrier instead of breaking it down. Your skin gets stronger over time, not weaker.

Now here’s what makes this line different from most anti-aging routines: every single product contains Retinatural Complex. Not just the serum. Not just the night cream. All of them.

Most skincare lines put their hero ingredient in one or two products and fill the rest with basic moisturizers (or water).

But with Countertime you’re getting bakuchiol and Swiss Alpine rose in your cleanser, your essence, your serums, your day cream, your night cream—everything. That’s why it works so well. Your skin is getting those retinol alternatives with every step.

So what does my bakuchiol routine look like day-to-day?

Let me walk you through it.

Step 1 is the Lipid Defense Cleansing Oil. This honestly changed how I think about oil cleansers. It removes everything—even mascara—without that tight, stripped feeling. And, it doesn’t leave you greasy. That’s a win.

Right from step one, you’re getting Retinatural Complex working on your skin, along with vitamin E and fatty acids that keep your moisture barrier intact.

Step 2 is the Mineral Boost Hydrating Essence. This one feels like you’re giving your skin a long drink of water.
It has mineral-rich sea water from France and fermented sugars that hydrate and calm things down. It preps your skin beautifully for what comes next.

Step 3 is my favorite step: the Retinatural+ Advanced Super Serum. This is the powerhouse.
It has those three retinol alternatives I mentioned—bakuchiol, sea fennel, and cranberry peptides—plus niacinamide and other antioxidants working together.

It firms, smooths fine lines, and helps with elasticity. The light pink color comes from vitamin B12, and it smells like rose geranium (which I love).

The results are pretty darn impressive.

After just 4 weeks, the clinical studies showed real improvements in elasticity, barrier function, and fine lines.

And 97% of people in the consumer study said they loved how their skin looked after 8 weeks. That tracks with my experience too.

Step 4 is your moisturizer. For daytime, I use the Antioxidant Soft Cream. It’s light but seriously hydrating—I use it on my face, neck, and chest.

It has nasturtium flower extract in it (along with the Retinatural Complex and fermented sugars), and it never feels heavy or greasy under makeup.

Then there’s my go-to retinol alternative night cream — the Tetrapeptide Supreme Cream. It’s much richer, but it absorbs well and doesn’t make my pillowcase feel gross like some night creams do.

The tetrapeptides in this one work while you sleep to firm and smooth everything out.

And Step 5 is the Ultra Renewal Eye Cream, which I try to use morning and night. It targets dark circles, crow’s feet, fine lines with Persian Silk Tree extract.

One jar lasts forever because you only need a tiny bit.

This routine has honestly made such a difference.

My fine lines look softer, my skin feels firmer, and I’ve got my glow back (before I started using these products, I was afraid it might be gone for good).

And with this collection, I’m not worried about what I’m putting on my skin. And that’s a huge relief.

Everything’s formulated without those 2,800+ sketchy ingredients on Counter’s Never List. Plus, it’s EWG VERIFIED.

Common Questions About Bakuchiol and Retinol Alternatives

Smooth, white lotion swirled in a fluid, abstract shape on a light gray background. Calm and soothing tone.

Is bakuchiol as effective as retinol?

Research shows bakuchiol delivers similar anti-aging benefits to retinol—improved firmness, smoother fine lines, and more even skin tone.

The big difference? It does this without the irritation, peeling, or sun sensitivity that often comes with retinol. For me, that makes it more effective because I can use it consistently without worrying about compromising my skin barrier.

Can you use bakuchiol every day?

Yes! Unlike retinol, bakuchiol is gentle enough for daily use—both morning and night. It supports your skin barrier instead of breaking it down over time.

That’s one of the reasons I love the Countertime line. Every product contains Retinatural Complex with bakuchiol, so I’m getting those anti-aging benefits with every step of my routine without any concern about long-term damage.

What’s the best natural alternative to retinol for mature skin?

For me, it’s bakuchiol combined with other supportive ingredients like peptides, niacinamide, and antioxidants. That’s why I chose a complete skincare routine rather than just one product.

The Countertime collection gives me multiple retinol alternatives working together—bakuchiol, sea fennel, cranberry peptides, and tetrapeptides. They work together to strengthen my skin barrier and support my skin’s natural resilience.
