5 Easy Non-Toxic Kitchen Swaps Even a Beginner Can Make

Last Updated: May 28, 2025

What if your kitchen’s sabotaging your health?  Let me explain…

Several years ago, autoimmune flares and relentless exhaustion crushed me.

I was laser-focused on clean eating, skincare, and safer cleaning products, thinking I’d mastered non-toxic swaps.

For the record, those are excellent things to focus on.

But here’s the thing: I had no clue that my kitchen itself was part of the problem!

Nonstick pans and plastic containers were quietly poisoning my meals with PFAs and BPACrazy, right?

Listen, there is no shame in not knowing.

I was totally clueless, and maybe you are too. And that’s okay

These simple, strategic non-toxic kitchen swaps can make all the difference!

One easy step at a time.

With gathering season (always) around the corner—summer cookouts, holiday feasts, or casual get-togethers—now’s the perfect time to make a change.

Stick with me to learn five simple swaps you can start today to make your non-toxic journey easier.

5 Easy Non-Toxic Kitchen Swaps to Detox Your Space

Jars of grains on a sunlit kitchen counter with a cup and saucer, next to a vase of white flowers. The mood is warm and tranquil.

I was shocked when I realized just how many harmful things were hiding in my kitchen, undermining my healthy meals.

Trust me, they’re probably in your kitchen too.

Here are five simple swaps that helped me cook cleaner and feel better—one easy swap at a time.

And here’s the best part—you don’t have to change out your entire kitchen to see a difference.

Swap Toxic Nonstick for Safe Cast Iron or Stainless Steel

Two stainless steel pots on a stove beside fresh vegetables including lettuce, tomatoes, and red peppers in a kitchen setting.
Ditch non-stick Teflon pans for stainless steel or cast iron pans.

I used to love my Teflon non-stick pans.  And back then, they were the only pans my husband would cook in.

They’re super convenient to cook in and easy to clean.

But when they get too hot, they release chemicals like PFAS that wreak havoc with your hormones and even have cancer risks.

Once non-stick pans get nicks or scratches, tiny flakes of that toxic coating can break off and end up in your food.

Yikes!

Safer swaps like cast iron and stainless steel don’t come with those risks.

They’re free of synthetic coatings, safe at high temperatures, and are built to last for years (or even generations).

If you still want a nonstick surface, ceramic-coated pans are a safer choice, and they’re made without PFAS. Caraway is a great brand.

We use a ceramic-coated pan for scrambled eggs.

I wish I made this swaps years earlier!

Replace Risky Plastic with Safe Glass Options

Glass containers filled with diced vegetables and cheese: yellow cheese, red tomatoes, orange peppers, and cucumber.
Replacing plastic containers with glass is an easy non-toxic kitchen swap.

I’ve known not to microwave in plastic containers for a long time. But I used to put leftovers in them without a second thought.

Even hot leftovers!

But heating plastics up can leach harmful chemicals like BPA and phthalates into your food. Gross, right?

Even if you’re not microwaving plastic containers, just putting hot food into them can cause these chemicals to seep into your meals.

Even “BPA-free” plastics aren’t safe, either. They often just swap one concerning chemical for another.

Now I use glass for just about everything—storage containers, mason jars, even glass meal-prep containers with snap-on lids.

They’re nonporous, don’t absorb smells, and are totally safe for reheating.

Many of them can even go in the oven (without the lids, of course).

Plus, they’re a win for both your health and the environment.

It’s one of those swaps I wish I’d made way sooner.

Ditch Harsh Chemicals for the Safety of Force of Nature

Quick peek at how Force of Nature activates (sped up for fun!)

If a cleaner comes with instructions to wear gloves or crack a window, that’s a huge red flag.

Many conventional cleaners contain VOCs, synthetic fragrance, and harsh ingredients linked to respiratory issues, hormone disruption, and even cancer.

These contaminants don’t just stay on the surface—they linger in the air and build up in our bodies over time.

They gave me headaches and left me wondering, “Wait—these are so toxic I need to air out the room and wear gloves… but I’m supposed to prep food on the surface I just cleaned with it?”

These chemicals hang in the air and add to our toxic load. And they give me headaches!

That’s why I’m obsessed with Force of Nature!

It’s a little countertop device that transforms salt, water, and vinegar into a powerful EPA-registered disinfectant

It kills 99.9% of germs—without VOCs or residues.

I use it on everything–counters, sinks, even Bella Blue’s toys!

It’s one of those swaps that just makes sense—for your health and peace of mind.

Plus, it’s super fun to watch in action and makes cleaning safe again!

Upgrade from Basic Pitchers to More Advanced Filters

A person fills a clear glass pitcher with water from a kitchen faucet water filter. The scene is bright, with a peaceful atmosphere, emphasizing cleanliness.
Filtering your tap (and shower) water is a smart move!

Unfiltered tap water can be a big problem. It can carry contaminants—like chlorine, lead, PFAS, and even trace pharmaceuticals.

These aren’t always things you can see, smell, or taste—but they’re still in there.

I’ve been filtering my tap water for years—but in the beginning, I was just using a basic Brita or PUR pitcher.

That was before I realized they didn’t catch much.

Now I use a more advanced water filtration pitcher.

It removes a wider range of toxins—including fluoride, microplastics, chlorine, 1,4-Dioxane, and mercury.

And the water tastes SO GOOD!

Other options like under-sink systems, whole-house filtration, or reverse osmosis can be more of an investment, but are worth looking into.

Quick tip: Filter your shower water to protect your skin and lungs from chlorine, VOCs, and other irritants.

Your skin and hair will thank you!

Trade Risky Plastics for Safe & Sturdy Bamboo or Wood

I used to love how easy plastic cutting boards were.

But bacteria can get stuck in the knife grooves, and they shed microplastics right into your food!  😳

Switching to wood or bamboo is a safer option.

Studies show that clean wood cutting boards retain fewer bacteria than plastic.

They’re also more durable and don’t leach toxins. Win-Win!

I’ve switched to sturdy bamboo cutting boards, and I’m really happy with them.

Bonus: they look pretty on the counter, too!

Small Changes, Big Impact

These five simple swaps that helped me go from cooking in a toxin trap to feeling good about the meals I serve.
